Achile Bonita Oliva's book has the same title as the exhibition he curated, ART TRIBES. He suggests the main art tribes in recent decades were: Fluxus and Events, Happenings, Mono-ha, the Factory, Actionism, Techno, Situationism. Then there were the anarchic, "chiefs without tribes". I find it interesting, this idea of the tribalism of many artists. How then does one make art about the forced detribalisation of those who historically lived in communities that had previously considered themselves to be tribal? Whether it is the Scots, or the Congolese, like this Force Publique soldier, or these refugees in the icy wastes of Scotland, what does forced detribalisation mean for art?
